Sometimes, serving children means going where the road ends.
For the Kiwanis Club of Lubao Gems, that has meant crossing the water to reach the coastal community of Lambiki in Lubao, Pampanga.
Our connection with Lambiki began in 2012, when our club was still known as KC-Lubao. What began with groceries, slippers and a feeding activity for schoolchildren became a relationship that continued even after the club’s decharterment and later rebirth as Kiwanis Club of Lubao Gems.
Over the years, we have returned whenever opportunities and resources allowed.
Different years. Different projects. One continuing commitment: children should not be forgotten because of where they live.
A Community Beyond the Road
Lambiki is a coastal community where many families depend on fishing for their livelihood.
Its location presents a very practical challenge for community service.
Reaching the community requires travel by motorized banca from local access points, making outreach more demanding than a typical land-based project.
The journey itself becomes part of the service.
Supplies have to be prepared.
People have to be coordinated.
Transportation has to be arranged.
Weather and water conditions have to be considered.
And volunteers have to be willing to make the journey.
But when the boat reaches the community and children are waiting on the shore, the reason becomes clear.
The distance is part of the challenge—but it should never become a reason to forget the children.
A Relationship That Began in 2012
Our Lambiki story reaches back to the early days of KC-Lubao.
In 2012, members brought groceries and slippers and conducted a feeding activity for schoolchildren in the coastal community.
After the original club was dechartered, the relationship did not disappear.
When Kiwanis Club of Lubao Gems was later established, members continued returning to Lambiki when resources and circumstances allowed.
The current club records approximately five years of service to the Lambiki area across the years.
That history matters.
Because sustainable service is not always about doing the same project every year.
Sometimes it is about remembering a community and returning when you can help.
Waves of Joy: Reaching Children by Boat
One of our recent Lambiki outreaches took place on October 9, 2025.
Kiwanians and volunteers traveled by motorized banca to reach the community, bringing food and essential items for children and families.
The journey was not without its challenges. The boat used for the trip did not have an outrigger, making the crossing an unfamiliar and memorable experience for some volunteers.
But the destination made every effort worthwhile.
The children were waiting.
And they welcomed the Kiwanians with smiles.
A Meal, Essentials and a Day of Connection
During the Waves of Joy outreach, the club’s service included:
🍲 Food for Children
50 children received warm lugaw with egg, accompanied by biscuits, a juice drink and fresh grapes.
👶 Support for Toddlers
20 toddlers received essential items including diapers, milk and clothes.
These may seem like simple gifts.
But in a community where assistance does not reach as frequently as it does in more accessible areas, practical support can matter greatly.
The project also created something that cannot be measured in pesos:
Time together.
Kiwanians met children and families.
Volunteers worked alongside local people.
Teachers helped prepare the food.
Community coordinators helped organize the activity.
And for a few hours, the shoreline became a place of fellowship, laughter and shared purpose.
Another Journey: 100 Shoeboxes of Joy
The Lambiki/Sta. Teresa coastal outreach continued in December 2025 with another meaningful activity.
On December 22, 2025, Kiwanis Club of Lubao Gems distributed shoebox gifts to 100 children in the coastal community of Sta. Teresa 2nd, Lubao, Pampanga.
Kiwanians once again traveled by motorized banca, carrying carefully prepared shoebox gifts, milk and snacks.
For the children, opening a shoebox was a moment of anticipation and excitement.
For the volunteers, it was a reminder of why the journey was worth taking.
100 children. 100 gifts. One shared message: You are remembered.
More Than a Feeding Program
It would be easy to describe our Lambiki activities simply as feeding programs or gift-giving activities.
But that would tell only part of the story.
Our coastal outreach is about connection.
It is about reaching communities that may be harder to access.
It is about listening to local people.
It is about responding to practical needs.
It is about giving children an experience of joy.
And it is about building relationships that make future service possible.
We don’t simply bring things to Lambiki. We bring ourselves.
Why Coastal Outreach Matters
Geography can influence access to services.
A community separated from the town center by waterways may face additional challenges in accessing education, healthcare, social support and other resources.
That does not mean every family in Lambiki experiences the same challenges, nor does one outreach project solve them.
But it does mean that community organizations can play a valuable role in helping bridge some gaps through appropriate, locally coordinated service.
That is where Kiwanis can contribute.
We go where we can make a difference—and we work with people who understand the community.
The People Behind the Outreach
A coastal project requires more than people willing to give donations.
It requires people willing to do the work.
